Cheese rolling

Cheese Rolling.
Although it may sound rather harmless don’t let the deceptive title fool you. From watching the video posted I soon learned that leaving on a stretcher or bleeding is expected when competing in this event. Coopers Hill, England is the destination that this chaos takes place. Pretty simple idea; the cheese gets rolled down a hill by a selected guest, then all contestants go burling down the hill at full speed till someone crosses the finish line at the bottom first. The catch is the fact that the hill is usually slippery/muddy, and is 300 yards long, with a gradient that is pretty much like a wall. The combination of all these things leads to a mad tumble of destruction all the way to the bottom. The winner gets bragging rights and a 7 pound chunk of Gloucestershires finest. I guess it’s a good thing I like cheese. All contestants are open to do the run. It is divided up into 3 categories men, women, and children. For those that are feeling froggy at the end there is also a race back up to the top of the hill (don’t know if I’ll make that one).

Wife carryin

There are many extreme sports that I would like to try, however this recent one I found isn’t one of them. Wife Carrying which was first introduced in Finland is exactly what is sounds like, the man runs an obstacle course with his wife on his back as fast as he can.
The man can carry his wife a few different ways; piggyback, fireman's carry (over the shoulder), or Estonian-style (the wife hangs upside-down with her legs around the husband's shoulders, holding onto his waist). And from various videos and pictures it seems Estonian style is the favored carry, however it doesn’t look so pleasing for the wife.
Most courses are about 278 yards and have two dry obstacles and a water obstacle, about one meter deep.
The rules are simple:
· The wife to be carried may be your own, the neighbor's, or you may have found her further afield; she must be at least be 21 years of age
· The minimum weight of the wife to be carried is 49 kilograms. If she is less than 49 kg, the wife will be burdened with a rucksack containing additional weight such that the total load to be carried is no less than 49 kg.
· The only equipment allowed is a belt worn by the carrier, the carried must wear a helmet.
· A time penalty is added if the wife is dropped (probably a penalty when you get home too)
· All participants must have fun

Like most races the fastest times win, however there are also prizes for best costumes and strongest man (the one who has the biggest wife?).
Most of these races are held in Europe mainly Finland where it originated however the United States also gets in on the wife carrying action. Monona, Wisconsin, Minocqua, Wisconsin, and Marquette, Michigan all have competitions. We even have a North American Wife Carrying Championship held every year at Sunday River in Maine, this year it will take place on October 10th. Winners of the competition will receive the wife’s weight in beer (maybe I will give it a try) and her weight times 5 in money (to buy more beer).

my generation seeks a thrill...

It seems the older I get the more wild and extreme sports become. From base diving to free running. It bewilders me to think exactly what sport will come next. Most off these sports are ones that I would like to give a try. Then on the other hand there are extreme sports like Ironing... Where people try and iron clothes in the craziest of places. Not sure what the thrill is there. So from all angles I find myself interested in finding out about these sports, there followers, and just how exactly it even came about. So I bring you EXTREME SPORTS

Justin Jerome Guthrie

Hello I'm Justin Jerome Guthrie.. This is my first blog! I know in class I told the classroom that I'd be doing a blog on nature.. Yet, as I walked out the door of the classroom and onto the walk way on my way to lunch. I seen a rather tall guy, with hair down to his back coasting along the side walk on a rather peculiar scooter. So it gave me the idea why not post blogs about all different kinds of crazy sports.. EXTREME SPORTS
